Consultation on the proposed redevelopment of the former Marley Works site in Lenham has concluded, with results pointing firmly toward employment-led regeneration.
Owner and developer Panattoni, Europe’s largest privately owned industrial logistics and distribution property developer, is progressing plans to transform the 70-acre brownfield site, which contains more than one million sq ft of existing buildings and commercial space, and is designated a key employment location within Maidstone Borough.
The public exhibition, held at the Dog and Bear Hotel in February, attracted more than 150 visitors. Of those who submitted feedback, 98.5% supported brownfield over greenfield development, 81.2% felt the site should be retained for employment rather than converted to housing, and nearly 85% are ‘definitely’ or ‘mostly’ supportive of an employment-focused scheme.
The proposals centre on demolishing existing structures, remediating the site, and delivering modern commercial floorspace for general industrial, storage and distribution, and light industrial uses, alongside ancillary office space, landscaping, and infrastructure improvements.
Significantly for inward investors, Panattoni has already received enquiries from a number of high-quality businesses seeking bespoke, purpose-built facilities in Kent. David McGougan, Senior Development Director – South East, commented that the site presents “a once in a generation opportunity” to bring a major employment location back to productive use.
A planning application to Maidstone Borough Council is now being prepared, informed by the consultation findings. For further information on the proposals, visit www.panattoni-marleyworks.co.uk.
